Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City, Inc. (NHSNYC) serves the five boroughs of New York City. Through financial empowerment and affordable lending, NHSNYC enables individuals and families to invest in, preserve and improve their neighborhoods, their homes and their future.
NHSNYC was incorporated in 1982 to support local residents who were working to improve their community, by providing executive leadership, strategic planning, resource development and construction management services.
As our first program, NHSNYC offered low-interest loans to homeowners in predominantly African-American and Hispanic communities for financing key repair projects—which helped address widespread redlining by banks at the time. In 1998, we first earned our federal certification as a Community Development Financial Institution and by 2016, had originated more than $106 million in home repair loans to families throughout New York City.
Between 2013 and 2015, NHSNYC successfully administered the NeighborWorks® America/Wells Fargo CityLIFT program in New York City, which provided income-eligible families with a total of $9.5 million in forgivable loans for downpayment and closing cost assistance.
In 2016, NHSNYC was awarded $9 million from key partners to provide more income-eligible clients with forgivable loans for key home repair projects or downpayment and closing cost assistance. We also signed a three-year contract with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development to provide over 1,400 limited-equity housing cooperatives with technical assistance services.
Today with offices, satellite presence and a Citywide network of partners, NHSNYC enables neighborhood residents to achieve their goals through a broad range of products and services and continues to target low- to moderate-income populations and geographic areas.
