Neighborhood Housing Services of NYC Took Over Times Square to Kickoff NeighborWorks® Week 2010On Friday June 4th, the staff, board members and volunteers of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City, Inc. (NHS) took over Times Square Pedestrian Plaza, where 96,000 people pass through every day, to raise awareness about loan modification scams and to kickoff National NeighborWorks® Week, a weeklong celebration of the accomplishments of the NeighborWorks® network. Fifty-six volunteers and staff provided information to close to 3000 people for avoiding loan modification scams and on exciting energy saving tips. There were giveaways, a poster contest, and information on upcoming NeighborWorks® Week events. We got approximately 660 people to sign in and subscribe to our e-newsletter. Together, we will help New Yorkers buy, improve and keep their homes. During National NeighborWorks® Week, June 5–12, Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City and its affiliates throughout the five boroughs will mobilize thousands of business people, residents and government officials in a week of neighborhood change and awareness. They will rehab and repair homes, paint and landscape properties, recognize successful partnerships and host a number of events that educate, train and inform. In 2009, more than 4,700 families benefited from the week’s activities nationwide. This year, all NHS NeighborWorks® Week events will feature the Loan Modification Scam Alert Campaign. Loan Modification Scams are a growing problem across the country: Homeowners facing foreclosure are losing their money – and their homes – to loan modification scams. NHS provides homeowners with free loan modification assistance as a part of our comprehensive foreclosure prevention counseling program. Times Square pedestrians met our new Chief Executive Officer, Bernell K. Grier, and received helpful advice from professional housing counselors. They will become inspired to get involved in their own community through one of the seven NHS neighborhood offices, located throughout the five boroughs, or through any of the 235 NeighborWorks® Chartered organizations across the nation.
