November 2, 2009 - Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHS) was a finalist in the ADAPT NY competition held by Cambridge Leadership Associates.  As a finalist in the competition, NHS was offered a two-day intensive management training session for its leadership team. The course, title “Leading Nonprofit Adaptation,” was held on October 26th and 27th. Through a combination of case studies, discussions, small group work and guided reflection, the NHS team learned the strategies and skills of Adaptive Leadership™, such as how to:

• “Get on the balcony,” orchestrate conflict, think politically, give the work back, and other Adaptive Leadership™ behaviors;
• Develop capacity to face uncertainty about personal approaches and styles;
• Effectively manage deep value conflicts within the organization and its people;
• Strengthen their ability to face internal resistance while implementing major changes; and
• Manage their personal vulnerabilities, care for themselves, and sustain their spirit.

NHS Chief Operating Officer Louis Kilkenny said, “The opportunity to participate in Leading Nonprofit Adaptation was an extraordinary opportunity for the NHS management team.  We look forward to implementing the Adaptive Leadership model here at NHS.”
