We all have goals be it paying off bills, improving our credit score, saving a little bit more for a rainy day, or putting away extra for a car or first home. The purpose of the Financial Capability Program, a new program offered by Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS), is to help residents fulfill their desired plans. This approach consists of an orientation followed by a series of workshops and one-on-one follow-up sessions. During the one-on-one, NHS coordinators will review, help in clarifying the customer's financial plan, and follow up with the enrollee's progress. Tonya Ores, Executive Director of NHS of EastFlatbush, believes the program is promising and is looking forward to its launching. "Unlike traditional programs which focuses on counseling, in Financial Capability, NHS will serve more as a coach than counselor. Meaning, the program will be customer driven so the customer will create and outline their own goals and we[NHS] will encourage, help tweak, and push them toward reaching it," said Mrs. Ores. Another strength of this program, Mrs. Ores cites, is its ability to potentially serve a wider audience which includes renters who would like to put away more, to college graduates looking to acquire sound financial habits, to a homeowner looking to consolidate debt. NHS of East Flatbush will be hosting a Free Financial Capability Orientation on Thursday August 18, 6pm. Come an see what this exciting program has to offer. Location: Lenox Road Baptist Church, 1356 Nostrand Ave. (on the corner of Lenox Rd.) Brooklyn, NY 11226.
